Glutathione for Skin: Reviewing the Oral, Topical and IV Research
Studies of glutathione for skin mostly ask one thing, whether it reduces melanin. Small randomised trials using oral and topical glutathione recorded modest, short-lived drops in the melanin index. Evidence for intravenous glutathione is scant, and regulators in the United States and the Philippines have cautioned against injectable skin-whitening products. Below we summarise what the research really measured.
Buy Glutathione Australia for Research, and Why It Is Linked to Pigmentation
Glutathione is a tripeptide (gamma-glutamyl-cysteine-glycine) and the most plentiful small thiol antioxidant found in animal cells. Our explainer on what glutathione is and how it works covers the chemistry in more depth. The connection to skin lies in how melanocytes make melanin, a process that relies on the copper enzyme tyrosinase.
Reviewers have put forward several ways glutathione might lessen pigmentation. It may inhibit tyrosinase, it may neutralise the free radicals that trigger melanogenesis, and it may steer output away from dark brown-black eumelanin toward lighter red-yellow pheomelanin, because cysteine's thiol group is built into pheomelanin. The 2018 review by Sonthalia and colleagues in Dermatology Practical and Conceptual, which asks whether glutathione skin lightening is a regnant myth or an evidence-based verity, emphasises that these mechanisms remain only partly understood. Keep that caveat in mind for everything that follows.

L-glutathione is just the form of the molecule that occurs in nature, so "L glutathione for skin" and "glutathione for skin" describe the same compound. Oral trials make up the largest share of the evidence.
- Arjinpathana and Asawanonda, Journal of Dermatological Treatment, 2012. In Bangkok, sixty medical students were randomly assigned to 500 mg of glutathione a day or placebo for four weeks. The glutathione group's melanin index dropped at all six sites measured, yet the gap against placebo reached statistical significance at just two, the right side of the face and the sun-exposed left forearm.
- Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology (2017), Weschawalit and colleagues. Healthy women were given 250 mg a day of reduced glutathione (GSH), oxidised glutathione (GSSG) or placebo across 12 weeks. Melanin index and UV spots tended to sit below placebo, certain sites showed fewer wrinkles in the GSH group, and elasticity showed an upward trend. There were no reports of serious adverse effects.
A 2025 systematic review by Sarkar and colleagues in the International Journal of Dermatology identified five randomised trials plus one open study of oral glutathione at 250 to 500 mg daily that showed significant melanin index reductions compared with placebo. The authors judged the effect to be moderate and found it did not last once intake stopped. Labs studying those pigment pathways can buy glutathione online in Australia as a 1,500 mg vial of reduced L-glutathione.
Order Glutathione for Sale, What Topical Studies Show
The main topical trial is Watanabe and colleagues, Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology, 2014. This double-blind, placebo-controlled, split-face study involved 30 healthy Filipino women who put a 2% oxidised glutathione (GSSG) lotion on one half of the face for 10 weeks. On the treated side the melanin index dropped significantly, and measures of moisture and smoothness also improved.
Wahab and colleagues later ran a double-blind trial (International Journal of Dermatology, 2021) that combined oral and topical glutathione, and the 2025 Sarkar review found the combination did better than either route by itself. Topical effects stay confined to the area treated, which is the compromise compared with oral use, whose result is body-wide but still modest. Glutathione for sale in Australia at NovaPep comes with a lot-matched certificate for in vitro work, never as a cream.
Buy Research Glutathione Knowing the IV Evidence Is Thin
For all the marketing behind IV glutathione as a skin whitener, only one controlled trial really exists. Zubair and colleagues, writing in the Journal of Pakistan Association of Dermatologists, recruited 50 women and analysed 32, comparing 1,200 mg of IV glutathione given twice a week for six weeks with saline. A larger number in the glutathione group said their skin looked lighter, but this faded once treatment ended, and adverse events, abnormal liver function tests among them, were documented. The 2018 Sonthalia review called the trial's design dubious and its analysis apparently flawed. The 2025 Sarkar review went a step further, concluding that IV glutathione is contraindicated for skin lightening in view of its side effects and lack of efficacy.
Our separate guide to glutathione side effects sets out the complete adverse-event picture for every route.
Shop Glutathione With the TGA, Philippine and US Positions in Mind
Australia. Speaking to the ABC in 2020, the TGA said it "has not considered the use of glutathione for skin lightening/whitening purposes". No indication relating to skin lightening or skin whitening appears among the permitted indications for listed medicines, and the TGA confirmed nobody had applied to add one. As a result, a listed glutathione supplement sold in Australia cannot legally claim to whiten skin. When we checked, there was no TGA safety alert aimed specifically at injectable glutathione.
Philippines. FDA Philippines Advisory No. 2019-182, "Unsafe use of glutathione as skin lightening agent", explains that injectable glutathione is approved in that country solely as an adjunct to cisplatin chemotherapy and not for skin lightening. It lists reported concerns such as toxicity to the liver, kidneys and nervous system and the risk of Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
United States. In its consumer update "Injectable Skin Lightening and Skin Bleaching Products May Be Unsafe", the US FDA cautions that these products, some of which contain glutathione, may be unsafe and ineffective and could include unknown ingredients or contaminants.
Order a Research Vial, Not Chemist Warehouse Skin Whitening Products
Anyone looking for glutathione for skin whitening at Chemist Warehouse is generally after a cream or an oral supplement. Those are consumer goods regulated as cosmetics or listed medicines, and as explained above, listed medicines in Australia cannot make whitening claims. NovaPep sells no supplements, no creams and nothing meant to be applied to skin.
Our glutathione research vial contains a 1,500 mg lyophilised fill of reduced L-glutathione intended for laboratory use, such as redox assays, antioxidant controls in cell culture and in-vitro melanogenesis models. It is neither a cosmetic nor a supplement. Labs studying skin biology frequently combine it with copper peptides from our skin and cellular research range, including GHK-Cu, which has a separate body of research in collagen and wound models. Order GHK-Cu online in 50 or 100 mg vials from the same Australian stock.
Buy Research-Grade Glutathione Online in Australia
Laboratories that need the molecule itself instead of a whitening product can order reduced L-glutathione as a 1,500 mg research vial. A single vial provides enough material for numerous melanin assays and antioxidant controls, and an independent laboratory verifies the identity and purity of every lot, with its report filed in our COA library. Pigmentation studies often add Melanotan 1 or GHK-Cu as comparison compounds. All of these are kept in Australian stock and sold online to laboratories only. Order the vial online, store it frozen, and reconstitute a fresh portion for each run.
Because reduced glutathione oxidises once in solution, make up only what each run requires and keep it cold, and our storage guide explains the essentials. NovaPep sells glutathione to adults 18+ for laboratory research use only. It is not for human or veterinary use, and nothing on this page is skin treatment advice.
Glutathione for Skin: Reviewing the Oral, Topical and IV Research FAQ
Can glutathione make skin lighter?
Small randomised trials indicate that oral and topical glutathione can lower the melanin index slightly, though results were confined to some measured sites and wore off after use stopped. A 2025 systematic review in the International Journal of Dermatology described the effect as moderate and not sustained, and concluded that IV glutathione should not be used for lightening.
Does L glutathione work for skin whitening?
L-glutathione is the very molecule tested in the skin trials. Oral studies at 250 to 500 mg daily found modest melanin index reductions against placebo rather than dramatic whitening, and the effect faded once the studies finished. In Australia, listed medicines are not allowed to make skin whitening claims.
Is glutathione TGA approved for skin whitening?
No. The TGA stated in 2020 that it had not considered glutathione for skin lightening or whitening, and the permitted indications for listed medicines contain no skin lightening or whitening indication. At that time no one had applied to add such an indication.
Are glutathione skin whitening injections safe?
Regulators have cautioned against them. The Philippine FDA's 2019 advisory stated that injectable glutathione is not approved for skin lightening. It also noted possible effects on the liver, kidneys and nervous system. Meanwhile, the US FDA has warned that injectable whitening products may be unsafe and contaminated. The sole controlled IV trial recorded adverse events.
Where can I order pure glutathione powder online in Australia?
NovaPep's online store offers reduced L-glutathione as a single 1,500 mg freeze-dried vial, held in Australian stock. It is a laboratory reagent for melanogenesis and redox research rather than a supplement, cream or injectable, and it comes with an independent identity and purity certificate that matches the lot number on the label. Do not purchase it for skin lightening or any personal use.
