What Is BPC 157? Inside the Gastric Peptide Labs Study
So what is BPC 157? It is a lab-made peptide, 15 amino acids long, modelled on a protein found in human gastric juice. Professor Predrag Sikiric's team in Zagreb first described it in the early 1990s. The body of research on it is big, yet nearly all of it comes from animals, and it focuses on the repair of tendons, the gut and blood vessels.

The letters BPC stand for body protection compound. Researchers at the medical school of the University of Zagreb separated a protective protein fraction out of human gastric juice, then synthesised one 15 amino acid stretch of it and gave it the number 157. What they produced is a pentadecapeptide that is not found by itself in nature. Because it is a fragment made in the lab, it is described as synthetic.
Over the years it has collected several other names. When the Croatian company Pliva took it into pharmaceutical development, it used the codes PL 14736, PL-10 and PLD-116, and the compound is occasionally referred to as bepecin. Research suppliers just list it as BPC-157 or BPC 157.

Written in one-letter code, the sequence is GEPPPGKPADDAGLV. That is fifteen residues, with a molecular weight of roughly 1419 Da. The three prolines in a row near the front make the chain unusually stiff, which helps explain why the Zagreb papers call BPC-157 a "stable gastric pentadecapeptide". It holds up in gastric juice far longer than most peptides do.
This stability is the feature that really distinguishes it in practice. It explains why BPC-157 is among the very few peptides that have been studied orally as well as in solution, and why capsules of it exist at all. You can buy BPC-157 online in Australia in both forms, a 10 mg vial or a pack of capsules.

Because nobody has established a mechanism in humans, the honest way to describe what BPC 157 does is to describe what it has done in models. The literature follows four main threads.
- Tendon and ligament. In the Journal of Orthopaedic Research in 2003, Staresinic and colleagues described quicker and stronger healing of cut Achilles tendons in rats, along with a greater load to failure. Writing in the Journal of Applied Physiology in 2011, Chang et al. showed it boosted the outgrowth, survival and migration of tendon fibroblasts via the FAK and paxillin pathway, though it did not directly raise proliferation.
- Gut. This was where the work began, with models of gastric ulcer, inflammatory bowel disease and fistula, and it eventually led to the PL 14736 programme in ulcerative colitis.
- Nitric oxide system. A large number of the Zagreb papers report that BPC-157 modulates nitric oxide signalling and protects the endothelium lining the blood vessels.
- VEGF and angiogenesis. In the Journal of Molecular Medicine in 2017, Hsieh et al. found higher VEGFR2 expression and Akt-eNOS activation in endothelial cells, which offers a believable pathway for new blood vessel growth in damaged tissue.
The original papers, each with a PubMed link, are collected in our BPC-157 citation library.
Buy BPC-157 Knowing Which Benefits the Evidence Supports
The BPC 157 benefits on record are genuine results in rodents, including improved tendon biomechanics, quicker closure of ulcers and fistulas, and protection of the blood vessel lining. A 2025 systematic review in the HSS Journal by Vasireddi and colleagues gave a balanced summary. It called the preclinical findings in muscle, tendon, ligament and bone injury promising, but noted that the evidence was only level IV and V and that clinical safety data were absent.
Human evidence amounts to three small reports, all from the same clinician. They are a 2021 chart review of 16 patients with knee pain, a 2024 series of 12 patients with interstitial cystitis, and a 2025 intravenous safety pilot involving two healthy adults. Not one included a placebo group. Our own view is that BPC-157 ranks among the most intriguing peptides in tissue repair research because the animal results are so consistent, and among the most overhyped because that consistency has never faced a proper trial. For the safety side, read our BPC-157 side effects evidence review.
Order BPC 157 With a Realistic View of Whether It Works and How Fast
Does BPC 157 work? In rat models it does, again and again, on the measures those studies selected. In humans nobody knows, since the trial that could settle the question has never been run. BPC-157 for sale in Australia at NovaPep lets labs run those models with a lot-tested sequence.
Timing is the same story. Animal studies generally assess outcomes over a period of days to a few weeks following an induced injury, a window that reflects how quickly a rat heals, not a person. The 2021 knee chart review checked on patients between six months and a year after treatment, but with no control group that tells us nothing dependable about onset. In short, no evidence-based answer exists for how long BPC-157 takes to work in people.
Shop BPC-157 as a Vial or as Capsules
NovaPep stocks BPC-157 in two formats, and the right one depends on how your study is designed.
| 10 mg vial | 500 mcg capsules | |
|---|---|---|
| Physical form | Lyophilised powder that is reconstituted before use | Pre-measured solid, with 60 in each bottle |
| Strength | Chosen by you | Fixed in every capsule |
| How to store | Minus 20 °C for long-term storage; 2 to 8 °C after reconstitution | Sealed bottle kept below 25 °C, dry and away from light |
| Best for | Work in solution | Study designs using an oral format |
To reconstitute the vial, use bacteriostatic water for peptide vials, and let the BPC-157 concentration calculator work out the strength per mL for whatever volume you add. Plenty of labs run it alongside TB-500, and our BPC-157 and TB-500 comparison sets out how the two differ. Order TB-500 online as a 10 mg vial if your study compares the two.
Buy BPC 157 Online as a Vial, Capsules or the Wolverine Blend
The BPC-157 10 mg vial is the most popular choice, since starting from powder means you decide the working concentration. For oral-format study designs, choose the 60-capsule bottle with 500 mcg in each capsule. When your project pairs it with TB-500, we suggest buying a separate vial of each so the two compounds can be followed independently. The Wolverine Blend fits designs that only ever test the pair together, and it costs less than half a BPC-157 vial plus half a TB-500 vial. Order online from Australian stock, include bacteriostatic water if you are buying the vial, and review the lot certificate before checkout.
Order for Research Use Only
In Australia BPC-157 is not an approved medicine and does not appear on the ARTG. NovaPep sells it to adults 18+ and to laboratories purely for research. It is not for use in people or animals, and we provide no dosing advice. Read our research use only terms, and for the regulatory position see where BPC-157 stands under Australian law. Our complete tissue repair research catalogue also carries TB-500, the Wolverine blend and KLOW.
What Is BPC 157? Inside the Gastric Peptide Labs Study FAQ
What exactly is BPC 157?
BPC-157 is a lab-made peptide of 15 amino acids (GEPPPGKPADDAGLV) modelled on a protein in human gastric juice, and its name stands for body protection compound. It originated at the University of Zagreb, where Professor Predrag Sikiric's group has researched it since the early 1990s, largely in rat models of tendon and gut injury.
What does BPC 157 do in research?
Animal and cell studies have associated it with quicker tendon healing, protection of the stomach and gut lining, nitric oxide signalling and blood vessel growth driven by VEGFR2. No human mechanism has been confirmed, and it is not approved as a treatment for any condition.
What benefits have been reported for BPC 157?
All the reported benefits come from preclinical work, such as stronger tendon repair in rats, quicker healing of ulcers and fistulas, and protection of the endothelium. Human data is confined to three small reports without controls. A 2025 systematic review in HSS Journal described the preclinical findings as promising while noting the absence of clinical safety data.
How quickly does BPC 157 take effect?
Nobody has a human answer. Animal studies measure effects across days to a few weeks after an injury is induced, in line with how fast rodents heal. No controlled study in people has looked at how fast BPC-157 acts, or whether it acts at all.
Is there evidence that BPC 157 works?
Published studies in rat models of tendon, gut and vascular injury report consistently positive findings, most of them produced by a single research group in Zagreb. Whether it works in humans remains unknown, since no randomised, placebo-controlled human trial has appeared in print, and independent replication of the animal work is still limited.
Where do I buy BPC 157 for research online?
NovaPep holds BPC-157 in Australian stock as a 10 mg lyophilised vial or a 60-capsule bottle. Independent identity and purity results for every lot are posted in the COA library.
